There are three major software groups discussed in SciRep; Desktop Publishers (DTP), Spreadsheets, and Wordprocessors. Your average PC software is aimed at business users, and is therefore not designed for use by scientists. Specialized software is available, for example TechWriter and GraphDraw for RISC OS. The latter will produce graphs more appropriate to science, and more easily than the most powerful of spreadsheets.

It is possible to use software you have to good effect, by following a few simple rules. In the following sections, I briefly introduce each area, and list the most important points you should follow. I also address specific problems, such as how to enter equations, creating graphs, and the correct way to include diagrams.
